Ever wonder what Contra would be like if the creators of BlazBlue had their way with it? Well your prayers have been answered. Enter "Hard Corps: Uprising", Arc System Works version of the gun toting bad ass orgy of massive bullet mayhem and the world renowned difficulty we've grown to love about Contra games. With only three lives, three continues, a gun, power ups and a sense of conviction that only seasoned gamers can only relate to, you're thrown into pure unimaginable hell. Only problem is that once you die... you're begging for more. I wouldn't be surprised if people who play this end up becoming masochists of the gaming kind.
So basically this is what you see the moment you jump out of the game. Just everything blowing up, lots of carnage and an undeniable fun factor.
You get to choose between two soldiers of the Rebellion fighting against "The Empire" (go figure). Bahamut, a defect of the empire who seriously packs mean ass weaponry and a blonde one eyed bombshell named Krystal. I don't really know the story so far as I've only gotten through the first stage... after dying a million times over. From what I can tell though is I don't really give a shit as long as I get to blow shit up and do it in style.
Unlike the original your character has the ability to dash on the ground and in air while simultaneously shooting at the same time. This makes for a lot of fun when you want to just go in and wreck havoc...however it's also a fast way to lose lives if you don't know what you're doing but after practice and hundreds of deaths and continues dodging bullets and shooting at the same time becomes second nature to you.
Another aspect they implemented into the game play is a mode called "Rising Mode" where you can actually choose from the characters and level them up and upgrade their abilities and such which can offer a huge array of game play variations. You can go about buying lives to additional weapons by earning currency (CP) you earn from playing the game and blowing shit up... earning credits while killing stuff? who doesn't love that? I sure as hell do!
As for the music and art? Both superbly done... In keeping with the Contra tradition they kept the theme of the series but in a much more METAL rendition. The stage music is also amazing as well because it really draws you into the action and the insanity. Heavy riffs, badass guitars and the kind of metal every Guilty Gear and BlazBlue fans grown to love.
The art is typical of Arc System Works and their usual anime themed character designs. From the hard built Bahamut to the sexy armor-clad Krystal. Both characters shine both within the game art and the sprites during gameplay. The voice acting could have been done better but hey who really pays attention to that when all you can care to hear are the screams of the dying and the explosions. The bosses... oh the bosses... MASSIVE, HUGE, and when you destroy them... ultimately satisfying... need I say more.
Overall, I love this game to death and for the price of $14.99... you can't go wrong if you love a challenge and are the type to never give up. And oh yeah... there are add-on content to the game as well... three new characters you can play as : Sayuri, Harley and Leviathan. Go check them out, the game out... AND THIS OUT!

Happy blowing shit up! >8D
